Recipe from DC, United States! How to Make Apple Pie Filling for the perfect apple pie, is super easy and this recipe comes straight from the White House.

It was President Obama's favorite Apple Pie from personal White House chef, Bill Yosse. I got this recipe when I was living in Washington DC and it was the best Apple Pie I have ever had. It’s so easy to make and  it takes no time to put a homemade apple pie on the table with a scope of vanilla ice cream on top.

Nothing says America more than Apple Pie, we sell them everywhere and the one question that I get most of the time is, “do you have A GOOD APPLE PIE RECIPE?”

I have tried 100’s it seems and they were ok but nothing that blew my sox off. So the journey continued until this came my way while living in DC. It’s easy to make and the Apple Pie Filling is perfect. I can eat it without the pie crust.

How to Make Apple Pie Filling

The secret is baking the apples, it will make all the difference in the world. I am also able to make it in advance so I use it when I’m ready to make my pie so it is fresh out of the oven.

How to Make Apple Pie Filling
Now I confess, I buy my crust and hardly ever make it. There are so many out there that are so super delicious. I confess I have made it myself many times and I am not the best crust maker so until I get a personal lesson on the art of crust making I will be buying mine.

Here are some crust that I love!

    1. Wewalka Pie Crust, Flaky & Lard Free - 9 oz - Vegan
    2. Schar Puff Pastry Dough, Gluten Free - 2 pack, 8.8 oz rolls - Gluten-Free
    3. Immaculate Baking Co Pie Crust - 15 oz box
    4. Pillsbury Pie Crusts - 2 pie crusts, 14.1 oz

Step by Step on How to Make Apple Pie Filling

    1. In a large saucepan, mix together the sugar and cornstarch, then toss in the apples, honey, vanilla, cinnamon, lemon juice and zest. Let it stand for about  20 minutes to soak the flavors.
    2. Bring the fruit mixture to a boil over medium heat, stirring occasionally until the mixture has thickened slightly, making sure fruit does not stick to the bottom of the saucepan. Remove and let it cool for about 12 minutes.
    3. Spray the pie pan with butter or coconut spray. Lay the first pie dough onto a pie pan and form it to the pan shape.
    4. Fill with the apple filling and then lay the second dough over the filling,

    5. Mix one egg and 1 tablespoon of water and mix. Brush the edges on the dough.
    6. Press very gently around the edges to make sure the egg wash seals the top pie dough to the bottom pie dough.
7, With a paring knife, puncture the top pie dough in a wide circle about 10 times with the tip of the knife to form steam vents.
    8. Brush top with remaining egg wash and sprinkle with sugar and cinnamon.
    9. Bake for about 30-40 minutes or until the pie filling is starting to bubble out the vents and the top pie crust is golden brown.

    10. Remove to a cooling rack and allow to cool.
    11. Top with a scoop of ice cream and you're ready to EnJoy!

    Ways to Serve

    • on top of ice cream
    • topping for oatmeal
    • filling for crepes
    • add as a side to pork chops

    Tip

I do watch over the saucepan so it does not burn, t can burn pretty quick so I like to do nothing else but watch my apples cook! It becomes the best air freshener in the kitchen. It's also very easy to make extra and freeze for a later date when you need a fresh apple pie for the holidays.
