Portuguese Prosciutto Fig Recipe

This Portuguese Prosciutto Fig Recipe is filled with flavor for the perfect appetizer. Melted goat cheese in the center of a fig that is wrapped with prosciutto.

Portuguese Prosciutto Fig Recipe
Nothing is more Portuguese than prosciutto, goat cheese and let's not forget the fruit of choice, figs. There are always figs around in a Portuguese household that are either fresh and picked for the season or dried and cut up to serve with cheese.

My father grew a fig tree back in Rhode Island which was taken care of like one of the family. Growing up we knew not to mess with the fig tree or else! Yes the fig tree was part of the family and no one was allowed to mess with it.

Portuguese Prosciutto Fig Recipe
Every season in the fall, it would be time to pick the figs and then we would have prosciutto with goat cheese outside on the picnic table while my father would pour a small glass of Porto Wine to accompany the appetizer on a brisk sunny fall day during the weekend.

Portuguese Prosciutto Fig Recipe
It is a tradition in Portugal to celebrate the season with a Fall Harvest that marked the end of farming for the year. My family is a long generation of farmers in Portugal and celebrating the end of the season has been a tradition of eating figs, smoked ham, chestnuts, and fresh goat cheese that my aunt would make every year.

Today I live in Florida and things are a little different with the passing of my father but I still have fond memories of this tasty fig recipe.  Now I share my fig recipes with Jeff and you guys to make for this Fall Harvest. Nothing tastes better than the flavors of fall to bring me back to my childhood.

As I share my culture with Jeff, he also brings to me his Polish heritage. It allows us to experience the faraway places that surround this world with food and the love of a country's flavor without ever leaving our own home. Enjoy!

5. Oil the pan and place the wrap fig onto the pan
6. Place all the figs so they are nestled tightly so the ham does not come undone while it cooks.
7. Cook in the oven at 350º degrees for about 15-20 minutes until the cheese is a little brown on top,
8. Drizzle with olive oil on top and let cool before serving.

Variations

There are different cheeses that can be added to the fig such as; sharp cheddar or another one of my favorite is the Gruyere cheese.

Ways to Serve

  • Toasted bread slices
  • Baguette
  • Crackers
  • Porto Wine is a must for me
  • Another wine that goes well is a Pinto Noir

Tip

I usually cook the appetizer until the goat cheese turns brown on top. Another thing that I do after I'm done cooking is let it cool a little so you can cut it easy and spread on top of a sliced baguette.
