    corn snack in bowl

Recipe from Peru! A delicious snack to prepare that takes no time to make is Peru Maiz Chulpe. Sprinkle on top salt or sugar and spice to snack on during an evening of binge watching.

    corn snack in bowl

I was first introduced to this snack on my Anniversary dinner at the China Chilcano in Washington DC. The restaurant mixes Peruvian fare with Asian and  Spanish cooking together. Which let me tell you, one of my top meals that I have ever had in my life.

The part I loved the most was the little bowl of Peru Maiz Chulpe to nibble on while you look over the menu. These little morsel of goodness out beat popcorn any day of the week! I loved them so much that I had to make them at home.

What I find fascinating about this lovely snack is that it comes all the way from Peru and landed in a DC restaurant then traveled to my kitchen table. Yet I have never been to Peru but after eating a meal at China Chilcano I was able to have a taste of this country's contribution to the world's culinary flavors.

    Ingredients Needed

There are only 2 ingredients for this snack food, Peru Maiz Chulpe  and salt. Nothing else but I did use my cast iron pan to cook these. I like an even heat when toasting corn or nuts and I believe the cast iron works better than my other pans.

    How to Make

    • Heat the pan to medium heat and pour the corn into the pan.
    • With a wooden spoon mix the corn around so the corn can toast but not sit to long to burn on one side.
    • I cooked mine on medium heat for about 15 minutes on medium heat.

    Where to Buy

I have purchased my Peru Maiz Chulpe from Amazon or a speciality store in the neighborhood. It's fairly inexpensive for the quality that is purchased.

    How to Store

When I make this snack I tend to make the whole bag. I like to save the jars of products I buy and reuse them for storing grains, nuts and now Peru Maiz Chulpe.

    Top Tip

When toasting the corn move around to circulate the corn as it cooks to get it toasty and not burn on one side. Let it cool down completely before storing.
