The House and Garden Tours has arrived and being a newcomer to Virginia I signed up and was ready to go. Only one problem came this fine Saturday morning, it was raining cats and dogs! So we waited for the weather to clear a little before noon and off we went.

I gear up our backpacks and made turkey sandwiches for our trip of walking the streets of Old Town Alexandria for the House and Garden Tours  I don’t think it took Jeffrey more than 10 minutes into our walk when he pulled out his sandwich. The first stop was at the Carlyle House and right next to it is Jeffrey’s discover, Dolci Gelato and of course being right there, he had to have something to wash down his sandwich.

I went into the Carlyle House to find Civil War memorabilia everywhere. It like stepping back in time and finding out how this generation lived with so little compared to us today. Yet Mr Carlyle was a wealthy man of his time and had a house of luxury.

We continued on our walk and followed our map from the Historical Society, which they were the sweetest women that had such pride for the area. I, being from Florida and not having anything older then 40 years in our area, find this quit amusing to say the least. The best part is they have people dressed in period pieces to give tours while they hold a candle lantern.

So off we went one house after another with every door decorated and flags hung above each home. It feels like the 4th of July but they have this year round to honor our country. It’s as cute as can be with people walking from home to home.

By 5 o'clock Jeff’s feet began to hurt and oh boy are we in trouble ladies because as we all know, man can not do pain. We happen to be by a shoe store call Comfort One Shoes, which specializes in walking footwear. We meet the nicest lady, who gave Jeffrey a foot massage. Now who do you think, screams out “my wife never rubs my feet?’ We walked out with a new pair of shoes and Jeffrey smiling. What better way to finish the day  then with happy feet.

The House and Garden Tours is in the month of April and happens every year. It is throughout the state of Virginia. You just pick the tour that you would like by visit  the Garden Club of VA

It’s truly great way to see American History but make sure to bring your walking shoes for House and Garden Tours !

About Lizzy

I love to cook, eat and find good places to have a great meal so no matter where I go I always ask the locals the same question, “Where’s a good place to eat?”
