Bundt Cake with Cake Mix a 1966 Classic

Whether going to a Christmas Party, hosting a baby shower, or simply baking for fun, a well-made cake mix bundt cake is the perfect dessert for special occasions.

This Chocolate Chip Bundt Cake is the end-all of all cakes. I call this the Big Sister of the chocolate chip cookie, which is moist and chocolately, like a cookie but in a cake.

I have yet to see anyone say, No, thank you, I'm on a diet. It screams at you to come and taste it. The first time I made this cake, Jeff and I could not stop eating it. Good God, it's sinful. So then I made another one for my husband to take to his training meeting, and he came back with an empty plate without a crumb.

The History of Bundt Cakes

The Bundt cake itself doesn’t have a single inventor, but the Bundt pan — the special fluted pan that gives the cake its iconic ring shape was invented by H. David Dalquist, the founder of the Nordic Ware company, in 1950.

In the late 1940s, a group of Jewish women from Minneapolis, part of the Hadassah Society, approached Dalquist asking him to create a modern version of the traditional European Gugelhupf pan (a heavy, decorative mold used for dense cakes).

Dalquist designed an aluminum, lightweight pan with the same shape and a central tube to ensure even baking. He trademarked the name "Bundt," adding a "t" to the German word "Bund" (which loosely means gathering or group), likely to secure the trademark.

At first, the pan didn’t sell well. But that changed in 1966, when a Tunnel of Fudge Cake made in a Bundt pan won second place in a Pillsbury Bake-Off. After that, sales skyrocketed, and the Bundt pan became a staple in American kitchens. Thanks to Pillsbury and Nordic Ware, it became a baking icon!

From chocolate bundt cake to chocolate chip bundt cake, I turned an average boxed cake mix into a show-stopping treat. Grab your 10-cup bundt pan, a large mixing bowl, and let’s bake!

Making a Bundt Cake 

The best part of making this cake is I only need a few pantry stap to make something truly special. Brands like Duncan Hines, Betty Crocker, and General Mills offer cake mixes that are perfect for bundt baking. Trust me, no one will know it started from a box!

Cake
1 box vanilla cake mix or white cake mix
1 cup vegetable oil
4 eggs
1 cup sour cream
1 cup water
1 large box vanilla pudding mix
8 oz. chocolate chips

Chocolate Ganache
½ cup chocolate chips
2 tablespoons butter

Step-by-Step for the Bundt Cake

Start with Room Temperature Ingredients
Always use room temperature eggs, sour cream for a smoother cake batter, and even baking. Cold ingredients can cause the batter to clump or bake unevenly. Preheat the oven to 325°F.

Use a Large Bowl and Mix at Medium Speed
Combine your cake ingredients in a large bowl or large mixing bowl. An electric mixer or electric hand mixer on medium speed helps ensure everything blends evenly without over-mixing.

Customize Your Cake Mix
At this time, add the chocolate chips to the batter. I use a spatula at this time to mix and scrape the mix.

Grease the Pan Thoroughly
Use nonstick spray, baking spray, or butter and flour to coat your bundt cake pan. Pay special attention to the curves and ridges, which are where sticking often happens.

Pour Batter Into a Prepared Bundt Pan
After mixing, pour the batter into a prepared bundt pan. Tap the pan gently to release air bubbles, which helps avoid large holes in the finished cake.

Baking Time and Cooling
Bake for 45-50 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean. Every oven is different so cooking time may vary. Once baked, let the cake cool in the pan for about 10–15 minutes, then invert it onto a wire rack to cool completely. This helps maintain that beautiful bundt shape.

Glazing and Decorating

After your cake cools, you can go simple or fancy. Try a simple chocolate ganache with a little chocolate chip and butter, by warming in the microwave or under a double boiler until melted, or dust powdered sugar on top, which is super easy.

  • Freeze leftovers for up to 3 months, then thaw before serving.
