As tributes of honoring American heros begin this Memorial Day Weekend, we have stepped back into time at the Civil War Cemetery in Old Town Alexandria. We walked down the streets and horns are playing as soldiers march in a straight line to honor the soldiers that died during the Civil War.
Everyone is dressed in a period piece from the 1800's except for the soldiers. I'm surprised to see this because it is right down the street from where we live and we are surrounded with patriotism. Not a day goes by that a soldier doesn't get off the train and walk the streets or conversations of politics fill the room at Starbucks.
Jeffrey and me feel so fortunate to be able to live here and be surrounded by American history wherever we go. But today is rather special because I never even knew there was a Civil War Cemetery. They honor these man that truly fought to create the United States of America. As you walk around you now have the old and the new melting together. Kids play close by and joggers go around the park. The Civl War Cemetery has become part of the life around us and on this Memorial Day weekend we pay tribute for the life these man gave to our country.
Civil War Cemetery - Memorial Day Weekend
There are thousands of soldiers laid to rest and this is only one of many cemeteries in the Virginia - DC area. I found out it will take 4 to 6 months just to be buried in the Arlington National Cemetery and is considered the most prestige for all the Armed Force. There is also a requirement to be buried at Arlington National Cemetery which the list is long and makes getting into a Ivy League College look easy.
Enjoy your Memorial Day as me and Jeffrey set out to explore the city of DC for this weekend of celebrations. Love Lizzy
