Gadsby's Tavern Museum, Alexandria, VA was our first stop with our friends from Florida. Now I have come to a conclusion that we don't know how to behave in public when were all together. We try, but it only lasts for a short time and then we are right back to ourselves. It's almost like kids that are told not to get their clothes dirty and they always do right before your out the door. The joking and playing around continued all day long.

The guys could not stay serious for a minute, like school boys in the play ground as they walked quickly and whispered jokes in my ears while I was trying to take pictures of this historical building that George Washington had stayed and ate at. This was the highlight on the first floor of the tour.

But as we moved on we discover the hardship that the civil war brought on and worse when the was was over. A room at this hotel would of cost $1.00 and that was shared with many men at the time. Unless you where wealthy and could stay at the $5.00 a night room that was shared with others. There was no air condition or mints on the bed for you before going to bed for the night. It was considered costly in those days because normal wages were $1.00 !!! We get that from a tooth-fairy!

The most impressive part of this historical building is the City Tavern’s Ballroom which was the location of George Washington’s Birth night Ball in 1798 and 1799, as well as Thomas Jefferson’s Inaugural Banquet in 1801. This marks the center of entertainment for DC at the time. The hotel was considered a 5 star hotel, even without any bathrooms, outhouses were still popular at this time.

The Ghost Tour continued at 7pm where we meet a group of tour guides dressed in period pieces from the 1700 century. It was filled with the mystery of the missing women and the jealousy of one husband that came back to hunt his wife who committed adultery. As the ghosts wondered through the grave yard we walked away knowing a little bit more of Alexandria, VA and how our Founding Fathers had a bit of a sense of humor.
